How are you feeling today?

Most people do not stop to reflect upon the meaning of that question, yet typically their answer is “OK.” During the hurry of the day, it may be a bit much to consider how one might be “feeling.”

It is the very act of pausing and considering one’s feelings that are significant to anger control. Most people understand the concept of emotional intelligence – all those skills that assist people to manage their relationships successfully and are vital to conflict resolution, anger control, and positive outcome. It would be to our benefit to reflect upon the relationships we have and the feelings that arise and consider if we know how to create a win-win situation when conflict arises. Often, we are not taught the skills of emotional intelligence or conflict resolution; instead, we react and do not know how to respond.

Remember the last time you had a physical? The doctor may have stuck your knee with a small hammer, your knee reacted automatically, and your leg kicked out. This is similar to when we react in anger. At this point, our reaction is “programmed” to yell, sulk, stuff, berate, criticize, and on and on. When we embark on changing the course in our relationships with ourselves and others, we make a conscious choice to make internal changes for the better. We know our triggers, reactions, and behavior. We take accountability for our actions in anger and conflict.

Knowing how you “feel” becomes the guidance system that helps you navigate your triggers. Make the conscious choice to take charge of your feelings and your actions by resolving your conflict.

After the big fight with your husband, you may have considered curbing your anger. But, you rationalize, he is the one with the problem! Maybe your friend teased you about enrolling in an anger management class. You laughed. You have tried counseling, but the sessions didn’t really help you control your anger. Maybe you have put off thinking even about it. You may not raise your voice when you get angry, but your husband tells you, “You are really angry.”

All of us have been there. It is easier – and safer – to think it will blow over.

Ever wonder why some people can talk things over but others fight? Wonder if you can be happy in your present relationship? Maybe conflict has been the fuel driving the relationship for a long time.

In Colorado, especially Denver, training centers offer services mainly to folks who have special needs, such as those who are enmeshed with legal situations. Unfortunately, people have come to associate “anger management” as services for these special groups of individuals. Who wants to sit in a large class of nameless people and air out private relationship issues? Most individuals who want to address anger, conflict, or relationship skill-building are not in trouble with the law. In fact, most people are just like you.

Not all training or programs are the same.

Anger management and conflict-resolution consultation is for anyone who wants happier relationships. If your anger or your constant conflicts are making you feel bad – and if anger is negatively impacting your life – it is time to stop running over the same ol’ ground. Resistance to seeking outside intervention is natural. In fact, people live with anger daily. Unfortunately, they pay for it through divorce, work-related issues, or health problems. The longer an individual experiences the duration of resistance, the longer that person endures the duration of unhappiness.

There is no pill or program to make anger disappear; it is a natural human emotion. However, having a well-defined coaching or consultation program can help stop problem anger or conflict. You can become happy again – in a short period of time.

SB Consultation offers premier conflict- and anger-resolution consultation that coaches people, via one-on-one structured lessons, to develop key relationship skills, called emotional intelligence, along with conflict- and anger-resolution skills so you can lead happier lives. Many individuals accomplish this goal within weeks, and most of them who attend this confidential coaching are professionals, physicians, attorneys, executives, homemakers, and business owners. They are successful in their careers but want to improve their ability to resolve conflict and anger so they can create happier relationships with their partners, their children, and at work. Usually, these individuals are not ordered to attend classes, but if they are ordered to do so, they have a desire to create positive change. If this sounds like you, you deserve happiness. Why wait for happiness?

The mayor of Austin, Texas, has to decide between anger management and community service to remove the charge of assault from his record. Mayor Will Wynn acknowledged that sometimes his anger can be a problem. Problem anger does not discriminate. High-profile people are not only subjected to public humiliation and scrutiny, but also, among other things, to moral judgment regarding their ability to uphold their position. For leaders in government, hospitals, or corporations, demonstrating key conflict resolution skills lends to trust and credibility in the public’s eye.

This is an election year. As a community, we need to be able to trust our leaders and peacekeepers. Can they control their own emotions? Do they have the ability to lead with sound reason? Reason is evaded when problem anger arises.

We cannot underscore the importance of key emotional intelligence skills such as empathy, compassion, awareness, and social conscience when resolving conflict in the face of crisis. A leader’s ability to remain grounded and calm is key to successful conflict and anger management.

Trust and credibility are important in leadership roles. These roles are not limited to the government. Leaders are all kinds of decision-makers – managers, executives, physicians, attorneys, and law enforcement, to name a few. These types of positions often are appointed to individuals who have integrity and the ability to guide. Maintaining these roles to the extent they are intended requires exceptional discipline of one’s emotions, understanding of one’s shortcomings, and having the ability to seek guidance when needed.

Imagine you and your spouse are hiking deep in the mountains and lose track of time. It is getting dark. You have the potential of encountering snakes or a mountain lion. You are running low on drinking water. Although you are good at navigating through the backcountry, you are five miles deep. At this point, would you start talking about how you got lost? Or would you grab your compass and map and plan a course to start moving toward civilization?

What does hiking have to do with couples’ anger management? I am sure you agree that life with your spouse is a trek — in order to have a memorable journey, you and your spouse need to make a conscious choice to realize when you are “lost” and how to find help to get back on track.

Couples’ anger management is different from attending counseling sessions. Counseling is very valuable and needed for many issues. Unlike counseling, however, anger management consultation or classes offered by a certified facilitator can teach couples in a short period of time to dramatically change destructive anger patterns and live more harmoniously. A couple recently came into the office wondering how anger management consultation would differ from counseling. After a few short weeks of improved communication, better intimacy, and good problem solving, they said: “It is so much better now that we have stopped fighting. We were tired of talking about the fights and getting nowhere.”

Consultation is specific and targeted to eliminate problem anger. The work involves identifying assignments on improving your communication skills, conflict resolution, and relationship skill-building. Quickly, couples are able to address their needs and feelings in a way that they did not think was possible.

Sometimes, couples may not be instructed on how to handle problem anger and how to diffuse it. Taking a timeout does not always work — if it did, more people would use this method. Specific skill sets are required before being able to use timeout. There are some excellent guidebooks to help you in your journey to stop the fighting and start the talking. At SB Consulting, we offer conflict resolution and anger management services for couples.

Although the medical health profession is steeped in tents of healing and recovery, we are now finding that physicians who aim to treat and elevate pain may have to contend with their own kind of suffering.

The treatment center or hospital is the manifestation of the human condition in dealing with the fragility of life. Here, health and illness merge; only a select few have the privilege of offering expert information bearing life and death decisions. It is an intense environment where the demands require one’s performance to be exemplary. There is no room for error. Under these conditions, it is not unusual to become desensitized to the demands and high stress in order to cope.

Unfortunately, physicians may develop an alternative method of coping to exist in a tense environment, misplacing some essential core value that may have attracted them to this profession. In order to survive and face death or tragedy in the emergency setting, physicians may create a wall that immunizes them from the vulnerabilities of their own limitations. What happens to the stress or potential feelings of inadequacy as they rise within physicians?

Physicians may take on a hardened persona with others – manifesting in demands, power struggles, and conflict. The concept of disruptive physicians lends to behavior that is not conducive to a therapeutic environment. Physicians may act out on their anger by shouting, demanding, undermining the efforts of other professionals, and publicly humiliating other staff members.

Compassion, empathy, and social awareness are critical emotional intelligence components that lend to the healing process. In fact, these variables are required in order to meet a physician’s own need for positive interaction within the hospital milieu but also are required when one is faced with challenges or roadblocks in the clinical environment. Treatment to assist disruptive physicians can be a painstaking process requiring specific training and understanding of the particular dilemma. It is understood that individuals who behave in a manner that results in conflicted outcome have difficulty identifying their disruptive behavior. Bringing up issues of anger will create more anger or resentment on the part of the identified physician. It is important to handle this situation with care and follow-up with a provider who is trained to handle and address this issue with sensitivity and care – the same desired qualities that physicians attempt to extend to their patients.

Seeking an appropriate course of action can make the difference in the outcome. Creating a specific action plan for physicians who need to control their anger is critical. These services do not offer counseling or psychotherapy. Instead, professional executive coaching of anger management means extending to physicians the expert advise on not only managing demanding work schedules and huge responsibilities, but also receiving guidance to alter the negative impact and change the angry behavior. The benefits of these services for physicians include:

Improving performance

Balancing between work schedules and huge responsibilities

Being in sync with one’s value system

Managing the stress

Altering anger-related reactions

Improving communication

At a fundamental level, confidential conflict and anger management training intervention with sensitivity redress potentially inflaming situations. Los Angeles-based Anderson & Anderson®, which is nationally and internally acclaimed for anger management training, is offering confidential executive coaching for physicians throughout the US.

Denver based Anderson & Anderson® anger management provider-Sonia Brill, LCSW, CAMF owner of SB Consulting is pleased to announce onsite confidential executive coaching service for physicians in major cities of the US.

“Disruptive physicians” are doctors whose behavior undermines their own professional integrity. Behavior may exhibit public yelling, slamming the phone, throwing charts, and engaging in confrontations in front of other staff or professionals. It creates a climate of tension and stress that is not conducive to a professional environment.

Dr. Schouten, director of the law and psychiatry service at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, presented data from his experience with 82 cases of physicians who had been referred for disruptive behavior. Overall, 69 doctors were referred by Physicians’ Health Services at their hospitals, seven by their practices or facilities, three by attorneys, two by residency programs, and one by the medical board. (1) Anger proved to be the most common reason for referrals.

Often, disruptive behavior of physicians impacts the work environment. Facilities become prone to receiving complaints by other professionals, patients, or families about their experience with the particular physician. As a result, risk management rises for that facility.

Why is this behavior tolerated? It is not ironic, but confronting an angry physician can lead to more anger. The process also initiates a chain of protocols. Simply, human nature is such that most people do not want to deal with conflict or change until it is a crisis. Unfortunately, patient care and professional relationships can be impacted during this delayed response.

Select providers understand this sensitive area. George Anderson, owner of the renowned Los Angeles-based Anderson & Anderson®, anger management services, knows how to respectfully handle the needs of these physicians. Anderson now has numerous agreements with organizations, hospitals, and health care systems to offer executive coaching in order to circumvent the challenges that administrators and risk management face when dealing with disruptive physicians.

Avoiding the issue does not make it go away. Seeking appropriate solutions can eliminate long-term costs financially and in regard to patient care.

1)Treatment Program Targets ‘Disruptive Physicians’: Reasons for Program Referral Include Anger, Performance and Compliance Issues, Sexual Misconduct, and Theft by Heidi Splete
